The Body Tool That Does More Than Sculpt: The Science Behind Gua Sha

For centuries, gua sha has been used in traditional medicine as a way to stimulate circulation and support the body’s natural healing processes. Today, modern research is beginning to confirm what practitioners have long observed: gentle scraping techniques can have measurable effects on circulation, muscle tension and tissue health.

But not all gua sha tools are created equal.

At ENOUGH, we designed our Body Gua Sha in stainless steel rather than traditional stone. The reason is simple: stainless steel offers the durability, hygiene and performance that make it ideal for body treatments.

Why circulation matters

Scientific studies using laser Doppler imaging have shown that gua sha can significantly increase microcirculation in the treated area. One pilot study published in Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing found that gua sha caused a four-fold increase in local microcirculation, with improved blood flow lasting for at least 25 minutes after treatment. (see article)

Improved circulation may help:

• reduce fluid retention
• support lymphatic drainage
• relieve muscle tension
• improve the appearance of skin texture

Researchers have also suggested that the improved circulation may partly explain why gua sha can reduce muscle pain in both the treated area and surrounding regions. (see article)

Supporting fascia and connective tissue

Beneath the skin lies a complex network of connective tissue called fascia. When fascia becomes restricted, it can contribute to stiffness, discomfort and uneven skin texture.

Gua sha techniques are similar to instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation (IASTM) used in physiotherapy. The smooth edge of a tool allows controlled pressure to be applied along the body’s contours, helping to release superficial tissue tension and improve mobility.

Clinical research has shown that gua sha can significantly reduce pain and improve functional movement in people with chronic neck pain after just one treatment session. (see article)

This combination of improved circulation and fascial mobilisation is why gua sha is increasingly used for:

• muscle recovery
• post-exercise tension
• improving skin texture
• enhancing body care rituals

A ritual that enhances your body care

Body care products work best when circulation to the skin is active.

Using the Enough Body Gua Sha together with the Caffeine Enhanced Tissue Oil or Vinifirm Contouring Crème allows the tool to glide smoothly across the skin while helping distribute active ingredients evenly.

The result is a simple ritual that combines:

• touch
• movement
• circulation
• nourishment

Even a few minutes of directional stroking toward the heart can help support lymphatic movement and improve how the skin looks and feels.

Emerging research beyond beauty

Beyond cosmetic benefits, research into gua sha has explored its effects on broader health concerns.

For example, a randomized controlled trial investigating gua sha in women experiencing perimenopausal symptoms found that regular treatments significantly improved symptoms such as sleep disturbances, fatigue and mood compared with routine care.

While more research is still needed, these findings highlight how manual therapies that stimulate circulation and the nervous system may have benefits beyond simple skin care.

Why we chose stainless steel

Traditional gua sha tools are often made from jade or quartz. While beautiful, these materials are fragile and porous.

Our stainless steel Body Gua Sha offers several advantages:

• hygienic and non-porous
• extremely durable
• easy to clean
• suitable for warming or cooling therapy
• designed to last for years

Stainless steel is also commonly used in professional therapeutic tools, making it a practical and long-lasting choice for body treatments.

A simple ritual with powerful effects

You don’t need complicated routines to support your body’s natural processes.

Just a few minutes of gentle gua sha movement can help reconnect you with your body while supporting circulation, relaxation and skin health.

Sometimes the simplest tools are the most powerful.
