Inside the Science of Resvinia®: What the Hair and Scalp Studies Found

Clinical Study 1: Supporting a Healthier Hair-Growth Cycle

In this three-month clinical study, Resvinia® was applied once daily to one half of the scalp, while the other half remained untreated for comparison.

The study was conducted predominantly in men experiencing chronic hair loss: approximately 93% of the participants were male and 7% were female.

How was hair growth measured?

Researchers used a phototrichogram, a non-invasive method of tracking individual hairs through standardised, magnified photographs of a precisely marked area of the scalp.

Images are taken at set intervals and analysed to determine how many hairs are actively growing and how many are in the resting or shedding phase. Because one half of each participant’s scalp was treated and the other was left untreated, every participant effectively acted as their own comparison.

1. Anagen hair: keeping more hair in its active growth phase

Anagen hairs are hairs in the active growth phase. During this stage, the follicle is actively producing a hair fibre and the hair continues to grow. The longer a follicle remains in anagen, the longer the hair has to grow before entering its resting and shedding phase.

After 84 days, anagen hairs had decreased by 2.9% in the untreated area, compared with only 0.9% in the Resvinia®-treated area.

This matters because the treated area retained a greater proportion of actively growing hairs over time. The difference was not pronounced after 42 days but became clearer after 84 days, reinforcing why consistency and time are important when assessing a hair-growth routine.

2. Telogen hair: limiting the shift towards the resting phase

Telogen is the resting phase of the hair cycle. Once a hair enters telogen, it is no longer actively growing and will eventually be released from the follicle as part of the normal shedding process.

After 84 days, telogen hairs had increased by 12.9% in the untreated area, compared with an increase of only 4% in the treated area.

A smaller increase in telogen hairs suggests that fewer follicles were moving towards the resting and shedding phase in the Resvinia®-treated area.

3. Restoring the balance between growth and rest

Looking at anagen and telogen hairs together gives us a clearer picture of the overall hair cycle.

After 84 days, the anagen-to-telogen ratio had declined by 13% in the untreated area. In the Resvinia®- treated area, it improved by 1.7%.

In simple terms, the untreated area was shifting further towards resting and shedding, while the treated area showed a more favourable balance between actively growing and resting hairs.

Clinical Study 2: Measuring Visible New Hair Growth

A second three-month clinical study was conducted in women between the ages of 18 and 64. Once again, Resvinia® was applied daily to one half of the scalp and compared with the untreated half.

What is the bleaching method?

The bleaching method creates a visible marker on the existing hair shaft. As the hair continues to grow from the scalp, the newly grown section appears at the root and can be distinguished from the previously bleached hair.

Researchers can then compare the amount of new growth in the treated and untreated areas. This provides a practical, visible way of assessing whether one side of the scalp is showing greater hair growth over time.

The percentage of participants showing improved hair growth in the treated area, compared with their untreated area, increased steadily throughout the study:

  • 26% after 28 days
  • 50% after 56 days
  • 63% after 84 days

This progressive increase is significant because it shows that the result strengthened over time. It also supports the importance of following a hair-growth routine consistently for at least 12 weeks rather than expecting a meaningful change within the first few weeks.

Looking More Closely at the Follicle

The following tests were ex vivo studies. This means that human scalp tissue was kept viable and studied under controlled laboratory conditions outside the body.

The tissue was exposed to a combination of UVA and PM10 pollution particles to simulate environmental stress. Researchers then compared untreated stressed tissue with stressed tissue treated with Resvinia®.

These studies do not replace human clinical trials. Instead, they help us understand the biological mechanisms that may contribute to the results observed in the clinical studies.

Ex Vivo Study 1: Helping Maintain IGF-1

IGF-1, or insulin-like growth factor 1, is an important signalling molecule within the hair follicle. It helps support follicle activity and is associated with maintaining the active anagen growth phase.

In the study:

  • The unstressed control tissue was set at 100%
  • Environmental stress reduced labelled IGF-1 levels to 71%
  • In stressed tissue treated with Resvinia®, IGF-1 levels measured 84%

Resvinia® therefore helped preserve IGF-1 under environmental stress, bringing levels closer to those seen in the unstressed control tissue.

Why does this matter? By helping protect a signalling pathway associated with the growth phase, Resvinia® may help create more favourable conditions for continued follicle activity.

Ex Vivo Study 2: Prevention of Hair Loss / Preserving Follicle Vitality Through Ki67

Ki67 is a marker used by researchers to identify cells that are actively dividing. Rapid cell division is essential within an active hair follicle because these cells contribute to the formation and growth of the hair fibre.

In the study:

  • Ki67-labelled cells in the unstressed control were set at 100%
  • Environmental stress reduced this measurement to 24%
  • Tissue treated with Resvinia® under the same stress conditions measured 62%

Although the treated tissue did not return completely to the unstressed control level, it retained considerably more cellular activity than the untreated stressed tissue.

This suggests that Resvinia® helped protect follicle vitality when the tissue was exposed to environmental stress.

Ex Vivo Study 3: Protecting Against Oxidative Damage

UV exposure and airborne pollution can generate oxidative stress. Over time, oxidative stress can damage proteins and interfere with the healthy environment surrounding the scalp and hair follicles.

Researchers assessed this damage by measuring protein carbonylation. Carbonylation occurs when proteins are damaged through oxidation, making it a useful marker of oxidative stress. In this test, lower carbonylation levels indicated less oxidative protein damage.

Within the hair follicles

Environmental stress increased protein carbonylation from the control level of 100% to 175%. With Resvinia®, the level was limited to 127% – approximately 27% lower than the untreated stressed tissue.

Across the scalp tissue

Environmental stress increased protein carbonylation from 100% to 330%. In the Resvinia®-treated tissue, it measured 180% – approximately 45% lower than the untreated stressed tissue.

These results suggest that Resvinia® helped limit oxidative damage in both the follicles and the surrounding scalp tissue. This protective effect may help support a healthier environment for the follicle, particularly when the scalp is exposed to UV and urban pollution.

What Do the Studies Tell Us Overall?

Together, the research gives us two complementary levels of evidence.

The human clinical studies showed that Resvinia® helped:

  • Maintain a more favourable balance between growing and resting hairs
  • Limit the shift towards the telogen or shedding phase
  • Support visible new hair growth, with results becoming more apparent over 84 days

The ex vivo studies provide insight into how it may support those results by:

  • Helping maintain IGF-1 signalling associated with the growth phase
  • Preserving cellular activity and follicle vitality
  • Limiting oxidative protein damage caused by UVA and pollution stress

Hair growth is gradual because it follows the body’s natural hair cycle. These results support the consistent, daily use of ResiGro for a minimum of 12 weeks, with continued use recommended to support the hair and scalp over time.

ResiGro Hair & Scalp Renewal Serum contains Resvinia® at the same 3% concentration evaluated in the human clinical studies.

Eye Oil vs Eye Cream: Why We Formulated Illume Without Water

Eye creams and eye oils are often placed in the same category, but they work in different ways. A traditional eye cream is usually an emulsion: a blend of water and oil held together with emulsifie...
